The Anvil PMA1040 is a 40 quart (approximately 38 litre) planetary mixer with a 1.5 hp air-cooled motor, three fixed speeds and whisk, hook and paddle supplied. Its published volume guide runs to 10 kg of bread dough and 20 kg of pound cake mix — a genuine step up from the smaller machines in the range, and enough dough capacity to be a working bakery mixer rather than a batter machine.

Why operators choose the ICE-PMA1040

  • 10 kg of bread dough — the figure that matters if dough is why you are buying. The 10-quart model manages 1.3 kg and the 20-quart 3 kg, so this is the point in the range where a planetary mixer becomes viable for real dough work
  • 1.5 hp air-cooled motor — mixing generates heat and heat kills mixer motors. Air cooling plus a 1.5 hp rating is what lets it run a full batch without cutting out
  • Direct drive, 100 per cent gear driven transmission — gears throughout rather than belts - torque delivered without slip
  • Three attachments supplied — whisk, hook and paddle in the box
  • Full volume guide published — mashed potato 13 kg, waffle or pancake mix 16 L, pound cake mix 20 kg, bread or roll dough 10 kg. The limit differs enormously by product
  • Stainless steel safety guard — the guard is stainless rather than a plastic moulding, so it cleans like the rest of the machine
  • Runs from a standard outlet — 1.125 kW draws under 5 A - unusual for a 40-quart machine and a real saving against a three-phase installation
  • 1,215 mm tall — a floor-standing machine - check clearance above for lifting the bowl out

Venue suitability

The PMA1040 suits bakeries, patisseries, restaurants and institutional kitchens working in larger batches. It is the point in the Anvil planetary range where dough capacity becomes serious — though for bread or pizza at production volume a spiral mixer still develops gluten with less friction heat.

Installation & delivery

It runs from a standard 10 A power point, so no electrical work is required. At 1.125 kW it draws about 4.7 A, which for a 40-quart mixer is genuinely modest — the 60-quart model in the same range needs three-phase supply. Dimensions are recorded width x height x depth: 610 mm wide, 1,215 mm tall, 660 mm deep. Allow clearance above the 1,215 mm height to lift the bowl clear and change attachments. Our data records no weight, which you will want before planning the position on an upper floor.

Frequently asked questions

Q: How much bread dough will it handle?

10 kg, per the manufacturer's volume guide. For context across the Anvil range: the 10-quart manages 1.3 kg, the 20-quart 3 kg, this 40-quart 10 kg and the 60-quart 27 kg. If dough is your main use, this is the first size in the range that is genuinely useful for it.

Q: What speeds does it run at?

Three fixed speeds - but we are not going to quote the figures, because our source states two different sets for this machine: 90/186/340 rpm in one line and 127/261/478 rpm in another. Both cannot be right. Ask our team to confirm the speeds if that matters to your application; we would rather tell you the data conflicts than pick one.

Q: Does it need three-phase power?

No, and that is worth noting. It runs from a standard 10 A single-phase outlet at 1.125 kW. The next size up, the 60-quart PMA3060, is a 400 V three-phase machine supplied without a plug - so this is the largest Anvil planetary you can simply plug in.

Q: How does it compare with a spiral mixer?

A planetary is the more versatile machine - whisk, paddle and hook across batters, creams and dough. A spiral is purpose-built for dough and develops gluten with less friction heat, which matters for bread and pizza. At 10 kg of dough this mixer is capable, but a bakery running dough all day will still want a spiral.

Q: Are the attachments included?

Yes - whisk, hook and paddle are all supplied.

Q: What warranty does the ICE-PMA1040 come with?

Covered for 2 years parts and labour under the manufacturer's Double Gold Star warranty — a branded term, but the substance is a full two years on both parts and labour. Terms vary by product — see our warranty information page for full details.
