Q: What is heat exchange and why does it matter?

The brewing water circuit is separate from the steam boiler. In a simple single-boiler machine, the water that brews your coffee has been sitting in the same boiler that makes steam; in a heat-exchange machine, fresh water passes through a coil inside the boiler and is heated on its way to the group. The coffee is brewed with fresh water every time, and that is the most noticeable taste difference between the two designs.

Q: Is it single phase or three phase?

Our records give the supply as a range - 220 to 415 V at 5,500 W - which means the machine is configurable rather than fixed. Single-phase and three-phase installations cost very different amounts, so please ask us to confirm which build you are being supplied before you book an electrician. We would rather tell you the record is a range than pick one and have you pay for the wrong work.

Q: What does the 100 W group element do?

It holds the brew group at temperature independently of the boiler. Without it, a group that has been idle cools down and the first shot afterwards extracts differently - which is why the first coffee after a quiet half hour is often the worst one of the day. The thermostatic element removes that.
