The Hamilton Beach COH0500 is a heavy-duty manual can opener that cuts the side seam of the can rather than puncturing the lid. Nothing is left sharp - not the can, not the lid - and the blade never touches the food. It opens cans up to #10 size (157 mm diameter, 178 mm high) and mounts permanently to the counter.
Why operators choose the COH0500
- Side cut, so no sharp edges — a conventional opener punctures the lid and leaves a cut edge on both parts. This one separates the side seam, so the lid lifts away clean - which is what removes the most common cut injury in a prep area.
- The blade never enters the can — cutting the seam from outside keeps the cutter clear of the contents, so there is no blade-to-food contact and nothing to transfer between cans.
- Can-locking mechanism — the cutter locks to the lid and stays there through the turn, so the can does not have to be wrestled and the cut runs evenly all the way round.
- Direct drive, no gears — gears are the usual wear point on a bench opener. There are none here, which removes the common cause of downtime.
- Replaceable stainless cutter — the cutter is heavy-duty stainless, rated to cut thousands of cans, and it is a replaceable part rather than a reason to replace the machine.
- Integrated can rest — the rest lets the can rotate freely during the cut instead of being held square by the operator, which is what makes one-handed operation practical.

Frequently asked questions
Q: What size cans can the COH0500 open?
Up to #10 size - 157 mm in diameter and 178 mm high. The arm raises and lowers to take smaller cans as well.
Q: How is a side-cut opener different from a normal one?
It cuts the side seam of the can instead of puncturing the lid. The lid comes away without a sharp edge on either part, and the cutter never enters the can, so it does not contact the food.
Q: Does it need to be bolted down?
Yes. It is a permanent countertop installation and is supplied with a mounting plate and stainless steel screws. Decide the position before fixing it.
Q: Can the cutter be replaced?
Yes. The heavy-duty stainless cutter is designed to cut thousands of cans and is a replaceable part.
Q: Does it need power?
No. The COH0500 is fully manual with a direct drive and no gears.
Q: What warranty does it carry?
12 months parts and labour.
