Choosing a commercial fridge for a Brisbane kitchen
Ambient temperature rating. This matters more in QLD than anywhere else in Australia. A fridge rated for 32°C ambient — the European standard — will struggle in a Brisbane back-of-house kitchen with no ventilation in summer. Look for 43°C ambient rated units; the difference is in the condenser size and compressor capacity, and shows up in your power bill and your replacement cycle.
Refrigerant choice. R290 hydrocarbon refrigerant handles high ambient temperatures noticeably better than the older R134a and R404a it replaced. It's also more energy efficient (roughly 20% less power consumption). Standard on most quality commercial fridges now.
Capacity. Brisbane café and restaurant operations usually start with a 2-door upright (around 1,200L) plus an undercounter or prep bench. Restaurants doing 100+ covers, dark kitchens, aged-care kitchens — typically a 3-door upright (1,500-1,800L) or a pair of 2-doors. Bulk buyers (mining contractors, school kitchens, hospitals) scale up to full walk-in cool rooms but commercial uprights still cover the prep and service refrigeration.
Floor space and air flow. Most units need 50mm clearance at the back for the condenser. In QLD that matters more — if the condenser can't dump heat, the compressor cycles longer and dies earlier. Don't push commercial fridges flat against a wall, and don't put them in unventilated cupboards.
Compliance. QLD council inspectors check that commercial refrigeration meets AS/NZS 60335.2.89 and that food storage temperatures stay between 0-5°C. Every unit below complies with the standard and ships with a digital temperature display visible from the front.
